The eyes of the world was on St. Louis on Labor Day and will be on the state of Missouri over the next 6 days. The 3rd Annual Tour of Missouri Professional Road Bicycle Race started on September 7 in downtown St. Louis with stage 1 of the race. Stage 1 consisted of 10 circuits around a 7.5 mile route around downtown in sight of the Gateway Arch, by Busch Stadium, and through historic Soulard District and Lafayette Square for a total of 75 miles.. The race consists of 7 stages across 7 days. The race will cover a total of 612.5 miles across Missouri and a total of 15 teams (120 racers) from around the world is competing this year.
We watched the start of the race and the first four circuits from a point that was about a block west of the the start-finish line on Market Street. A large enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the race. An estimated crowd around the route was about 65,000. We watched the finish of the race on TV.
A large amount of support is necessary to put on such a large event, part of which is team support vehicles, photo groups on motorcycles, medical support (some on motorcycles and others in an ambulance), and police.
Probably seems obvious to someone up there, but not having been to St. Louis, I'm a bit surprised how big the arch seems when photographed with those office buildings in the foreground. I guess most photos show it by itself or just the Capitol, and it's hard to get a sense of scale.
